It is part of a series called <em>Tornisterschrift des Oberkommandos der Wehmacht<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The idea was to provide the regular soldier with information about the countries, the religions, the local customs, etc. in a format small enough to carry around in their backpack which is what &#8220;Tornister&#8221; in old German means.<\/p>\n<p>This first one cover the south-eastern part of Europe which &#8211; in 1941 and until 1943 &#8211; was one of the major theaters of war.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-den-S\u00fcdosten-2500K-2000x3000.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[514]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-518\" alt=\"Schlag nach \u00fcber den S\u00fcdosten - 2500K - 2000x3000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-den-S\u00fcdosten-2500K-2000x3000-201x300.jpg\" width=\"201\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-den-S\u00fcdosten-2500K-2000x3000-201x300.jpg 201w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-den-S\u00fcdosten-2500K-2000x3000-687x1024.jpg 687w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-den-S\u00fcdosten-2500K-2000x3000.jpg 2015w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 201px) 100vw, 201px\" \/><\/a>The map covers southern Europe from <em>Prague<\/em> in the North to <em>Tripolis<\/em> in the South and from <em>Sicily<\/em> to <em>Istanbul<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>As such, it covers most of <em>Italy<\/em>, all of the <em>Balkans<\/em>, the coastal areas of <em>Libya<\/em> and <em>Egypt<\/em> and the <em>Aegean Sea<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Scale is <em>1:2.500.000<\/em> and the publisher is <em>Bibliographisches Institut AG., Leipzig<\/em>. A map, handy for someone trying to grasp the locations of the Mediterranean Theater of War and the War in the Balkan.<\/p>\n<p>Download size is roughly 8MB at 2000 x 3000 Pixel. Stitching and re-coloring worked pretty well as the map is in rather good shape for its age.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-Cover.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[514]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-517\" alt=\"Karte von Westeuropa - 3500K - Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-Cover-e1379072391610-211x300.jpg\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-Cover-e1379072391610-211x300.jpg 211w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-Cover-e1379072391610-720x1024.jpg 720w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-Cover-e1379072391610.jpg 1407w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a>Next up is the <em>Karte von Westeuropa<\/em> &#8211; the Map of Western Europe. It dates back to 1944 and also belongs to the series <em>Tornisterschrift des Oberkommandos der Wehmacht<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>The map scale is <em>1:3.500.000<\/em> and the map covers Europe from 12\u00b0 West to 14\u00b0E and from 36\u00b0 North to 62\u00b0North.<\/p>\n<p>That includes the coast of North Africa with <em>Algeria<\/em> and <em>Tunisia<\/em>, <em>Spain<\/em> and <em>Portugal<\/em>, <em>France<\/em>, the <em>British Isles<\/em> and <em>Ireland<\/em>, the <em>Netherlands<\/em>, <em>Belgium<\/em>, <em>Luxembourg<\/em>, <em>Switzerland<\/em> as well as <em>Denmark<\/em>. Partially covered are <em>Italy<\/em>, the <em>Deutsche Reich<\/em>, <em>Norway<\/em> and <em>Sweden<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-2000x3000.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[514]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-516\" alt=\"Karte von Westeuropa - 3500K - 2000x3000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-2000x3000-204x300.jpg\" width=\"204\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-2000x3000-204x300.jpg 204w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-2000x3000-698x1024.jpg 698w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Karte-von-Westeuropa-3500K-2000x3000.jpg 2047w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 204px) 100vw, 204px\" \/><\/a>The map is particularly interesting as it is providing a single-sheet view on the Western European Theater of Operations and is the perfect addition to the previously mentioned map of South-Eastern Europe.<\/p>\n<p>Again, the map is available for download, the size is roughly 8MB, the dimensions are 2000 x 3000 pixel.<\/p>\n<p>Stitching was a bit difficult this time as you can see by the map&#8217;s caption. But in general, the quality of the scanned image is above average, also recoloring has worked out nicely.<\/p>\n<p>There is one final map to cover now &#8211; I have missed the <em>Gea \u00dcbersichtskarte Skandinavien<\/em> on eBay a little while ago &#8211; and it does not come up very often.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-Cover.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[514]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-521\" alt=\"Schlag nach \u00fcber Skandinavien - 3200K - Cover\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-Cover-208x300.jpg\" width=\"208\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-Cover-208x300.jpg 208w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-Cover-711x1024.jpg 711w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-Cover.jpg 1390w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 208px) 100vw, 208px\" \/><\/a>In return, I have gotten yet another one of the <em>Tornisterschriften<\/em>, this time from 1939\/40.<\/p>\n<p>This one is labeled <em>Schlag nach \u00fcber Skandinavien<\/em>, literally &#8220;Check out Scandinavia&#8221; although the map itself is titled <em>Nordseel\u00e4nder<\/em> &#8211; North Sea Countries.<\/p>\n<p>It covers the northern European area from 10\u00b0West to 20\u00b0East and from 48\u00b0North to 72\u00b0North.<\/p>\n<p>The area covered includes parts of <em>Iceland<\/em>, the <em>British Isles<\/em>, <em>Ireland<\/em>, the northern parts of <em>France<\/em>, almost all of the <em>Deutsche Reich<\/em> except for some parts of <em>East Prussia<\/em>, <em>Denmark<\/em>, the <em>low countries<\/em>, <em>Norway<\/em>, <em>Sweden<\/em> and the western parts of <em>Finland<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-2000x3000.jpg\" rel=\"lightbox[514]\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright size-medium wp-image-520\" alt=\"Schlag nach \u00fcber Skandinavien - 3200K - 2000x3000\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-2000x3000-206x300.jpg\" width=\"206\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-2000x3000-206x300.jpg 206w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/09\/Schlag-nach-\u00fcber-Skandinavien-3200K-2000x3000-705x1024.jpg 705w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 206px) 100vw, 206px\" \/><\/a>The map closes the gap my collection has on Northern Europe, especially since the coverage goes up to the area around <em>Banak<\/em> and <em>Kirkenes<\/em>, from where the Luftwaffe was flying their attacks against <em>Murmansk<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>This map comes in handy for all operations over the North Sea and the British Isles as well as for the Norwegian Theater of Operations.<\/p>\n<p>Download size is roughly 8MB, resolution is 2000 x 3000 pixel. Stitching and color correction worked extremely well although the original is in a pretty poor shape.<\/p>\n<p>As always, I am not providing the full-scale maps but down-sized versions &#8211; the originals are 12000 x 8000 pixel and way beyond reasonable download sizes.
