RAF, flown by <strong>F\/O Harry Woods<\/strong> (Serial: 139965) and <strong>F\/SGT Philip Bullimore<\/strong> (Serial: 1545776), is on a long-range reconnaissance mission down the river Elbe.<\/p>\n<p>West of J\u00fcterbog, the Mosquito is intercepted and shot down by a Messerschmitt Bf 109, flown by <strong>Ofw. Heinrich von Stade<\/strong>, 10.\/JG 300 &#8211; a unit specialized in Mosquito hunting.<\/p>\n<p>The crash site is documented as &#8220;Weddin, 12 km NE of Wittenberg&#8221;. Both crew members are killed, they are initially buried in the church yard of the tiny village. I have recently visited the village of Weddin to take photos for a book project.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/?attachment_id=795\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-795\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MM233-5.jpg\" alt=\"MM233-5\" width=\"1280\" height=\"850\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MM233-5.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MM233-5-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>To the south of the village, the vast woodlands of the <em>Korpst\u00e4dter Heide<\/em> are covering the landscape, frequently interrupted by farm fields. To the north, west, and east, open country with fields dominates.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/?attachment_id=792\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-792\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MM233-2.jpg\" alt=\"MM233-2\" width=\"1280\" height=\"850\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MM233-2.jpg 1280w, http:\/\/www.chronicles-of-the-luftwaffe.de\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/06\/MM233-2-300x199.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The village itself is tiny, probably only 20 &#8211; 30 houses.
